Both lead to full stack developer jobs. The right choice depends on the kind of company you want to work for and how you like to learn.
Students often ask us whether to learn .NET or the MERN stack. Both are in demand, both can lead to a full stack developer job, and neither is "better" in every situation. Here is how to decide.
What is the .NET stack?
.NET is Microsoft's platform. You write back ends in C# with ASP.NET Core and Web API, store data in SQL Server through Entity Framework, and build the front end with Blazor, React or Angular. It is widely used for enterprise software, banking, ERP and large internal systems.
What is the MERN stack?
MERN stands for MongoDB, Express, React and Node.js. Everything is JavaScript, from the server to the browser. A related option, MEAN, uses Angular instead of React. It is very common in startups, product companies and web agencies.
How they compare
- Language: .NET uses C# (strongly typed, structured). MERN uses JavaScript (flexible, one language everywhere).
- Learning curve: JavaScript lets you see results in the browser quickly, which many beginners enjoy. C# teaches strong programming discipline that makes other languages easier later.
- Typical employers: .NET is common in enterprises and software service companies. MERN is common in startups and agencies.
- Databases: .NET projects usually use SQL Server. MERN projects usually use MongoDB, though SQL works with both.
- Mobile and desktop: .NET has a strong ecosystem for desktop and cross-platform apps. JavaScript skills transfer to React Native for mobile.
Which should you choose?
- Choose .NET if you want structured, enterprise-style development, enjoy typed languages, or are targeting software service and product companies using Microsoft technology.
- Choose MERN if you want to build web products quickly, are interested in startups or freelancing, or want one language for the whole project.
- Not sure? Learn SQL and basic programming first. These skills are needed in both paths.
Whichever you pick, build projects
Employers hire people who can show working software. Whatever the stack, finish at least two or three real projects (for example a job portal, an e-commerce store or a booking system), put them on GitHub and be ready to explain how you built them.
