Want to show up for "near me" and city searches? Work through this local SEO checklist, from your Google Business Profile to reviews and website signals.
Local SEO helps your business appear when people search for something nearby, such as "digital marketing course in Ludhiana" or "dentist near me". These searches often show a map with three businesses at the top. Here is a checklist to improve your chances of being one of them.
How Google decides who ranks locally
Google says local results are mainly based on three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well-known and trusted you are, based on reviews, links and mentions). You cannot change distance, but you can improve the other two.
Google Business Profile checklist
- Claim and verify your profile.
- Use your real business name without extra keywords added.
- Select the most accurate primary category, plus relevant secondary ones.
- Fill in services, products, description, website link and opening hours.
- Add a phone number you actually answer.
- Upload real, good-quality photos regularly (exterior, interior, team, work).
- Use posts and updates to share offers and news.
- Answer questions and check your profile weekly.
Reviews checklist
- Ask every satisfied customer for a review, ideally right after a good experience. Share your direct review link on WhatsApp or print it as a QR code.
- Reply to all reviews, positive and negative, calmly and professionally.
- Never buy or fake reviews.
Website checklist
- Mention your city and service area naturally in titles, headings and content.
- Create a separate page for each main service.
- Show your full name, address and phone number (NAP) on every page, matching your Google profile exactly.
- Embed a Google Map on the contact page.
- Make sure the site is fast and works well on mobile.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data so search engines understand your details.
Citations and local mentions
List your business on trusted directories and keep the details identical everywhere: name, address and phone number. Mentions in local news, education portals, associations and community sites also build prominence.
Content checklist
- Publish helpful articles answering questions local customers ask.
- Share case studies and customer stories with permission.
- Update your pages when prices, services or hours change.
Common local SEO mistakes
- Different business names or phone numbers on different sites.
- Using a virtual office address or fake location, which can get a profile suspended.
- Keyword-stuffing the business name.
- Ignoring reviews or leaving profile information outdated.
