The quality of AI answers depends on the quality of your question. Use this simple formula to write prompts that work.
A prompt is the instruction you give an AI assistant. Vague prompts get vague answers. Clear prompts save time and give far more useful results. Writing good prompts is a skill you can learn quickly.
The simple prompt formula
Include as many of these five parts as are useful:
- Role: who the AI should act as ("You are an experienced HR manager").
- Task: what exactly you want it to do.
- Context: the facts it needs: your business, city, situation.
- Audience and tone: who will read it and how it should sound.
- Format and limits: bullets, a table, 150 words, three options.
Before and after
Weak prompt
Write an advertisement for my coaching institute.
Strong prompt
You are an experienced copywriter. Write three short Facebook ad
texts (maximum 40 words each) for a coaching institute in Ludhiana
that teaches Class 10 maths. The audience is parents. The tone is
friendly and trustworthy. End each ad with a call to book a free
demo class. Do not promise guaranteed results.
The second prompt tells the AI who it is, what to write, who it is for, how long it should be, and what to avoid. The answer will be much closer to what you want.
Eight habits that improve every prompt
- Be specific. "Three subject lines for a follow-up email" beats "help with email".
- Give examples. Paste a sample you like and say "write in a similar style".
- Set limits. Word count, number of options, reading level.
- Ask for a format. A table, a checklist, numbered steps.
- Say what to avoid. "No jargon", "no guarantees", "no exaggeration".
- Work in steps. Ask for an outline first, then each section.
- Iterate. Reply with "make it shorter", "more formal" or "add an example".
- Ask it to ask you. Try "Ask me up to five questions you need answered before you start".
Useful prompt patterns
- Explain simply: "Explain [topic] to a 12-year-old, then give a one-line summary."
- Improve my text: "Rewrite the text below to be clearer and more polite. Keep my meaning. Show a list of what you changed."
- Compare options: "Compare [A] and [B] in a table with pros, cons and best use."
- Plan: "Create a four-week plan to [goal]. I can spend one hour a day."
- Check yourself: "List anything in your answer you are unsure about or that I should verify."
Remember the limits
- AI can produce confident but wrong answers. Verify facts, numbers and sources.
- Do not paste private or confidential information into public AI tools.
- Good prompts improve results, but they cannot make the AI know things it does not know, such as your latest prices or private data.
