SEO vs Google Ads: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Both bring customers from Google, but they work very differently. This guide helps you choose, or combine, the right one for your budget and goals.

When people search on Google, they see paid ads at the top and organic (unpaid) results below. Getting into the paid spots is Google Ads. Earning a place in the organic results is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). Both can bring you customers, but they behave very differently.

What is SEO?

SEO is the work of making your website useful and easy for Google to understand, so it ranks for searches your customers make. It includes content, page structure, site speed, links from other sites and, for local businesses, your Google Business Profile.

  • Cost: no cost per click, but it needs time and skill (or an agency).
  • Speed: usually takes months to show strong results.
  • Lifespan: results keep building and last as long as you maintain the site.

What is Google Ads?

With Google Ads you bid to show your advert when people search specific keywords. You pay when someone clicks (in most campaign types).

  • Cost: you pay for every click, so costs grow with competition.
  • Speed: traffic can start within a day.
  • Lifespan: traffic stops when you stop paying.

Side-by-side

  • Need leads this month? Start with Google Ads.
  • Building a business for the next few years? Invest in SEO.
  • Very small budget? Fix your Google Business Profile and basic on-page SEO first, then test small ad budgets.
  • Launching a new product or offer? Ads for speed, SEO for lasting visibility.

The best answer is often both

Ads give you quick data about which keywords and messages turn into enquiries. You can then use that learning to decide which topics to target with SEO content. Over time, strong SEO reduces how much you must spend on ads.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Running ads to a slow or confusing website.
  • Not tracking enquiries (calls, forms, WhatsApp clicks), so you cannot tell what works.
  • Expecting SEO results in two weeks.
  • Targeting broad keywords instead of specific, high-intent searches.
